The series of kangaroo gold coins started in 1986 under the name “Australian Nugget”. At that time, their design featured various famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia. The idea behind it was to commemorate the gold rush. Despite the efforts, the desired success was not achieved. Therefore, the manufacturer made the decision to revise the design. From 1990 onwards, the kangaroo, Australia’s national symbol, was depicted on the coins. The position as well as the surroundings of the depicted kangaroo changed annually. In 2008, the coin was renamed “Australian Kangaroo”.
